DIY Tassel Garland

Wednesday, August 17, 2016

Last November I made a really sweet and simple tassel garland for my best friends 30th birthday, and since then I have used it in numerous photo shoots. It's just the perfect thing and adds just a touch of color to the background.

As of lately it seems like I am constantly crafting and trying to DIY everything. From party planning, to photography backdrops, props, and home decor, it has all been on the to-do list.

And yes, I'm sure you can totally go out and buy one, but for under $3 and a little bit of time you can easily do it yourself! The awesome thing about these little tissue paper tassels is that each sheet of paper makes 4 tassels. And for each string of garland I make, I only need 6 sheets of tissue paper (24 tassels). So actually this project costs way less than $3. It ends tip being about .03 cents per tassel or just under .75 cents for a string of garland. I'm no rocket scientist, but I KNOW that's cheaper than buying one in the store! And if you DIY, you can make it exactly the way you want it with whatever colors you choose.
I bought my tissue paper at Hobby Lobby, one of my favorite stores ever! Each package comes with 8 sheets of paper for $1.29. Then if you use a 40% coupon that makes each package only .77 cents! I bought 3 packages total. I like to do three different colors in my garland. All the other supplies I needed I already had at home. Scissors, twine, and hot glue (optional).
Here's what you'll need:
Tissue paper
Scissors
Twine or string
Hot glue (optional)
Directions:
1. Lay out 1 piece of tissue paper flat and then fold it in half length-wise.
2. Fold it in half width-wise.
3. Then fold it in half width-wise again.
4. This is important. Start cutting from the open end, NOT the folded end, otherwise you'll end up with confetti ;)
5. Cut in small strips all the way across, leaving it about 2 inch from the top of the fold.
6. Unfold width-wise once. And cut up the center, making two pieces.
7. Unfold each piece again. You will end up with 3 pieces. 2 small and 1 large. You will have to cut the large piece in half buy cutting up the folded side. Now you should have 4 pieces.
8. Unfold each piece again, until you are left with this, and there are no folds left.
9. Fold/roll the paper up length-wise and then carefully roll/twist it up.
10. Then make a loop and twist to secure. This is where you can use a dot of hot glue if you want to make sure it's held extra secure.
 11. Repeat with remaining colors of tissue paper.
12. Thread a piece of twine or string through the loops and hang!
That's it! You can alternate colors or do whatever pattern you choose. I just love easy DIY projects and this is one that I've done a few times because it turns out so cute with not a lot of money or effort.

I hope you found this tutorial helpful, and I hope you have a sweet and productive day everyone :)
